Aloha! Genius Hour #2

Hello 2-3 Families!

Here is a look at our second Genius Hour in 2nd grade.  This time we traveled to the beautiful island of Hawaii.  The topics the kids chose to research this time were....Surfing, hula dancing, pineapples, about Hawaii, volcanoes, and humpback whales.  Just as we did during Genius Hour #1, we used the FlipSnack website to conduct our research.  This time, the students created a video presentation using the iPad App, StoryRobe.  This app allowed the students to use Google to select an image that would represent their research, save it to their photos, and then import that photo into StoryRobe.  The students would then record their voices to create a slideshow presentation.  This was a great app to use and I am looking forward to having the students work with it again.  Check out their final projects below. This Friday we will travel to Morocco so stay tuned for our next Genius Hour recap.  Mahalo!

  2. Aloha Ms. Porte and students,
You did a wonderful job in capturing Hawaii. However, your clip of hula dancers is incorrect. Your clip shows Tahitian dancers. There are two main categories of hula. One being kahiko which is accompanied by a chant and traditional instruments. The other is 'auana which developed due to Western influences and is accompanied by guitar, ukulele, and double bass.
Wikipedia can give you more information if you are interested.

I have learned something new tonight and look forward to sharing it with my 2nd grade class. This is a learning process for all of us. Thank you so much for your kind words and teaching us something new.

  3. When I was in Kauai this summer, I attended a Polynesian festival. A big Part of the 2-day event is a dance competition, with competitors in all age groups. Many of the dancers did Hula-like dancing, but I am not sure of the specifics. This festival is held annually. Friends who live in Kauai told us to attend. Although the event is not widely publicized, I am glad we found out about it. The dancing was amazing.

Here is some information I found online about the festival:

"Kauai Polynesian Festival. This 2-day event features the dances of Tahiti, New Zealand, and Samoa in a competition, as well as exhibitions and educational cultural workshops plus local foods, arts, and crafts. Call tel. 808/822-9447. Early August." Source: http://nyti.ms/Tp3MQK
