March Comes In Like.....

Hello 2-3 families and friends,

Although spring is around the corner, you would never know it with the winter weather we've had this weekend.  Take a look at what we've been up while staying warm in our classroom.

ROCK'n Out
This week the geologists of 2-3 continued to explore the three groups of rocks; igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.  We read stories, watched videos, and conducted our own experiments to see how well we could sort the rocks in our kit according to their appropriate rock group.  Next week, we will continue our explorations during science and during our reading center time.  Take a look at our geologists in action this week.

BIOGRAPHY WRITING
This week, the kids had a chance to practice identifying the ingredients of a biography during our center reading time.  Using stories about figure skater Sarah Hughes, gymnast Zhang Nan, and tap dancer Gregory Hines, the kids took notes about the important information that fit the ingredient list of a biography.  Next, they practiced their summarizing skills by finding the main idea of each chapter in the story.  Finally, the kids wrote their own summary of the story.  This week, the kids will write interview questions that will allow them to create the biography of someone else.

FRACTIONS
This week, we began Unit 8 which is all about fractions.  We have focused on understanding that fractions are parts of a whole.  They are made up of numerators and denominators.

At the end of the week, we began to talk about the word EQUIVALENT.  Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal to each other, but they are written differently.  This concept will continue to be discussed further during our lessons this week.

MYSTERY READER AND STAR STUDENT
Thank you Mr. Phillips for being our Mystery Reader this week!  We also had a wonderful time celebrating David as STAR STUDENT!  Don't forget to checkout our photo gallery for photos from these two activities!

I hope you are having a safe and warm weekend!

- Danielle
